Rear Swing Arm Insight
So I know basicly what I need to build for my car (and have already ordered parts) but the basic idea is to replace my rear swing arm with a custom one thats a bit longer, holds the wheels a bit higher (into the car) and is adjustable.
So far I have ordered two bars from Joel that are 2x2 1/4" wall box tubing with 3.5" 4 link threared bushings on one end. This will allow for the arm to be lengthened alittle to help with adjusting it or to move the wheels back that extra bit to clear the doors. I know I have to make a bracket to mount the wheels to the bars, but what I am looking for advice on is the the brace that connects the two bars together. Its need to keep them aligned but allow some flexibility. My idea was to get a 4 link bar with threaded ends on both sides with jam nuts. The bars would have opposite threads on either end so when I twist the bar one way it sortens and twist another way and it lengthenes. Also it should allow a bit more flex so when/if I hit sides the rear swing arm has some flex. heres a picture of my idea, a crappy pic from the manual of the stock arm and a pic of the arm a guy with an HHR built (this may help give you the over all idea since its the same basic arm I plan to build) My Idea (top view) ![]() Pic from catelog (my pic under it, it can be ignored) ![]() And the Swing arm built for the HHR ![]() I know what I wrote is kinda long, but any insight would be great. Should I go ahead with the 4 link bar as the brace or should I just go with a solid bar(no adjustment)

I don't think you should have the cross brace adjust able, at least not with bushings or anything that would allow pivoting.
If that happened as you lifted one side up the other side would pull in and you would find your rear end crab walking down the road. If you just had some way of putting threaded rods on each end and have the bar that connects them be tapped inside that way you could still be rigid. And also run jam nuts to hold you adjustment at whatever you set it up for. Only because basically you would be running a 2 link setup this way and they don't allow much side to side movement. Thats one their downfalls but they do stay pretty rigid. The cross brace is there to stop the rear end from pulling out sideways in a turn. it is kinda like running a pan-hard without your rear end being pulled over when you lift the back end. To be honest my opinion is to copy what that guy did in the back of the HR just make it a little longer if need be to centre the wheel in the wheel well when aired out. Or run a four link but I think last summer when you and I were looking under there there isn't much room for one?

I'm sure a 4 link COULD be put in, but theres not really any room for it without really cutting up the car. I think I'll just copy the HHR swing arm then. My pivot idea was just something that came into my head, but wasn't a solid idea, thats why I figured I'd ask. I'll probobly go with a threaded rod as my center piece with jam nuts just so I can allign it 100%.
Thanks Guys
