what kind of vehicle/engine? sounds to me like possibly distributor is 180degrees out.. but that of course depends on your vehicle and what kind of engine it is...

is a 73 mazda pick up
the engine is a 4 cylinder b1800
i checked to make sure the right valves were opening and the rotor is in the approtriate position and it all checks out.. i too thought i might be 180 out.. so i double checked my double check..LOL... i put the intake on the carb and the back fire then went to the exhuast side.. my thought is it could be the valve lashing... the valves not closing all the way...

what do you think about this?

Definatly sounds like timing to me. try turning your dist a bit either direction to see if it helps at all, may not start, but if the backfiring goes away you've found the problem.

usually if the valve isn't closing all the way you won't have much (or just bad) compression, do you have a compression gauge you can hook up in the plug port? if it's low you might be on to something with the valve lash.

found the issue.. you cant machne the heads on these engines or you cant ever time it again unless you use a spacer.. soo.. 350 bucks on a rebuilt head.. wasted.. no big deal.. i got a bigger better plan for winter
